Richard mentioned earlier in the week that he was playing his guitar again, so I dared him to play it during the set, which was a little more wild & angular than our practice earlier that day. all sorts of acoustic shards, slabs, splats and reflections. maybe some sound to come…

Pawn Above The Winter Oaks remix

Just out from The Land Of is this really excellent release from Pawn (Hideki Umezawa), titled Above The Winter Oaks and fully kitted-out with some great remixes from The Green Kingdom, My Fun, Steinbrüchel, offthesky, and of course myself. This is a transcendent collection of tracks and I’m really proud to have my work included.

Here is what Hideki has to say:

First, to make this album, I collected field sounds.

Birds singing at trees, trampling fallen leaves in the park, brittle ambience in the air…

All field recording sources were recorded in Autumn ~ Winter 2008.
I made acoustic sounds using instruments like a glass-harp, handbell, glockenspiel, pianica, harmonica, guitar, ice, fallen leaves and mixed electronic, warm, subtle tones.

I hope that you can see your winter in this album.

offthesky du soleil remix

The Resting Bell netlabel has reissued offthesky’s du soleil, to which I have a contributed a remix. It’s a lovely little release, featuring some of Jason’s best sounds.

Time is a strange thing. Two and a half years ago (65 releases ago, in netlabel-speak) Resting Bell released offthesky’s rare decay. A timeless and beautiful 4 song EP. I didn’t hesitate a second when Jason Corder asked me if I’d be interested in a re-release of his musically related du soleil EP which was originally released via atmoworks back in 2007.

du soleil is not only fully remastered, but it is also extended with three fine remixes from Darren McClure, Billy Gomberg and offthesky himself. So all in all around 54 minutes of pure bliss – not really an EP anymore I suppose. As I listened to du soleil it was hard for me to believe that this work is even dated. It sounds fresh, gentle and bright with the same timeless quality, you can find in all of Jason’s releases. du soleil is a very calm ambient-work with many subtle melodies and musical ideas hiding inside.

Last but not least, the three additional remixes are quite stunning: Darren McClure’s rework presents a multifaceted structure of evolving and lush tonal climates. Billy Gomberg brings a moody and diffused interpretation with subtle tone resting upon a bed of ash like analog texture. Jason’s own perspective is a soft re-synthesis of compositional elements and samples used throughout all 4 pieces in du soleil. This group of additional treats, makes the perfect landing for a work that certainly stems from somewhere above.

Listen To The Weather

Kate Carr was kind enough to ask me to participate in her Listen to the Weather project, as part of this year’s Ear To The Earth festival. The theme of this year’s festival is “Water and the World,” and Kate’s general commission was to interpret weather and reservoir data from one day using sine tones, and samples from a song with the word “water” in the lyrics. I used data from March 24, 2010, and sampled from “The Same Deep Water As You” by The Cure.
