{"id":1208,"date":"2015-11-23T09:50:49","date_gmt":"2015-11-23T14:50:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fraufraulein.com\/billy\/?p=1208"},"modified":"2015-12-07T11:38:25","modified_gmt":"2015-12-07T16:38:25","slug":"students-of-decay-on-boiler-room","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fraufraulein.com\/billy\/2015\/11\/students-of-decay-on-boiler-room\/","title":{"rendered":"Students of Decay on Boiler Room"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>this mix of fresh gems from <a href=\"http:\/\/studentsofdecay.com\" target=\"_blank\">Students of Decay<\/a>\u00a0features a track off my upcoming LP, <em>Slight At That Contact:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"450\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/234342745&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_comments=true&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false&amp;visual=true\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/boilerroom.tv\/upfront\/044-students-of-decay\/\" target=\"_blank\">SOD on Boiler Room<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Intro from Alex Cobb:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>This mix of 100% unreleased material is a snapshot of some of the records slated for production on Students of Decay in the coming year, with the exception of the opening track which appears on <a href=\"http:\/\/pitchfork.com\/reviews\/albums\/21233-city-of-brides\/\" target=\"_blank\">our next release<\/a>,\u00a0hitting shelves in December.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Followers of the label will recognize many familiar names here, which is in line with my tradition of keeping things close to the vest.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Running a label in 2015 is often a thankless and uncertain job, but I found myself inspired and reinvigorated while putting together this mix. I hope it treats your ears just as warmly.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Intro from Boiler Room:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Students of Decay has been in operation for a full decade now, and there&#8217;s a solid chance you&#8217;re unaware. Even closing in on 100 releases, the label&#8217;s stable contains names\u00a0unfamiliar to most heads, let alone the layman. Last year\u00a0Kyle Bobby Dunn&#8217;s\u00a02hr opus &#8230;&amp; the Infinite Sadness (shouts to <a href=\"http:\/\/i.kinja-img.com\/gawker-media\/image\/upload\/phqziy92itqgzzmjez1b.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">all the zeroes<\/a> out there)\u00a0probably\u00a0made the single biggest \u2018splash\u2019, but it&#8217;s all relative.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>As opposed to a label like, say <a href=\"https:\/\/boilerroom.tv\/editions-mego\/\" target=\"_blank\">Editions Mego<\/a>, there\u2019s been no accidental stumbling onto the zeitgeist along the journey \u2013 and if anything, Decay is all the richer for it. Around a teaching career and family life in first California, then Ohio, Cobb has been diligently putting out whatever he finds especial resonance with; field recordings, acoustic noodling, thick drone, all sorts. There&#8217;s no attempt to sprint toward any\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/boilerroom.tv\/i-think-therefore-im-ambient-leaf-panel\/\" target=\"_blank\">ambient goldrush<\/a>\u00a0or change policy to make good on trends. It&#8217;s a labour of love.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>And so it proves here: a clutch of\u00a02016\u00a0material that is subtle, graceful and surprisingly stirring. It&#8217;s half the length of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/boilerroom.tv\/upfront\/upfront-002-air-texture\/\" target=\"_blank\">Air Texture<\/a>\u2019s equally beautiful Upfront entry from late Fall\u00a0last year \u2013 entirely purposeful, as Cobb feels\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">these\u00a0<\/span>&#8220;tend to fare better erring on the side of concision, or at least thats generally my governing principle when I make them&#8221; \u2013 and so demands to be replayed and reinvestigated as soon as it draws to a close. Not something that can be said about all ambient mixes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>To me, by turns it evokes\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.discogs.com\/label\/60-Fax-49-69450464\" target=\"_blank\">Fax +49-69\/450464<\/a>, The Sinking Of The Titanic and\u00a0even Sigur Ros\u2019 bowed swells on M. Sage&#8217;s closer. But it&#8217;ll probably sound different to your ears.
