Billy Gomberg lives in San Francisco, California. His practice incorporates traditional & modern synthesis, digital treatments, acoustic location recordings and occasional instrumentation. Commitments to improvisation, exploration of internal and external spaces, interpersonal relationships as pathways of cultural and emotional exchange, guide his work.

2024’s Nanahari Edit (again from Dinzu Artefacts) documents a live performance in Tokyo from September 2023 of raw digital loops, a collage of location recordings from the west coast, mild revisions and light reveries in overdubbing. Concise and bright, a profound excursion to new territory with some close comforts in hand.

2022’s Wilderness and Luxury on Dasa Tapes articulates shifts and returns grown from living in California. New locations, rediscovered materials and techniques finding a poetic perspective on topographies of experience, threading urban environments, and natural (built) spaces.

Billy’s solo LP Slight At That Contact was pressed by Students of Decay and released in October 2016, a modestly “mature” impression of urban abstraction and poetics.  The cassettes Transition and Beginners, were released in 2017 and 2018 (respectively) on Dinzu Artefacts, with A Changed Meaning issued by Strange Rules coming between them, a trio of works wandering various paths beyond those earlier spaces.

Billy’s published recordings stretch back to 2005, including 2009’s touchstone Comme.

Extinguishment, a duo with Andy Guthrie under the name Fraufraulein, was released by Another Timbre in early 2015, their follow-up Heavy Objects was released by Marginal Frequencies in 2017. Solum was released on Notice Recordings in 2021, like Wilderness and Luxury, reflects ongoing changes to their lives and geographies.
