capacity (LP/digital, Florabelle, 2026)
beyond excited to announce my new LP capacity, out september 18 2026 on florabelle records. more soon, get right to it:
Rather inspiringly, Billy Gomberg is experiencing a career peak in his second decade of composition and improvisation. Through a practice that is humble and rigorous in equal measure, he has issued work with Students of Decay and Dinzu Artefacts alongside numerous self-released editions that document his evolving approach to modular synthesis. Though Gomberg has recently shared many longform recordings, capacity, his first proper album in four years, finds him zeroing in on nine gorgeously potent modes for the LP format.
Much like how a shard of glass can be penetrative and prismatic in the same moment, the textures of capacity exist in a space that is glowing and jagged, full of fleeting gestures but often anchoring everything with an elemental stillness. One can hear cues from the jittery glitch work of artists like Microstoria and Josh Mason here, but—and yeah, this is cliched but sincere—Gomberg’s work here is determinedly its own thing. This is music not fascinated with its own connection to the technology that facilitated it; rather, it’s in dialogue with a certain emotional and physical geography. Viewed through this lens, it makes sense that Gomberg also is a gifted photographer.
On that last note: the LP is accompanied by a striking booklet of Gomberg’s black and white photographs in recent years. Your experience as a viewer and listener might mirror each other—an integration with landscape, a revealing of layers, and an appreciation of palpable beauty.
Here’s a lovely, lovely personal note from Ned Milligan of Florabelle:
In the lead-up to Friday’s release of this new LP by @billygomberg wanted to try to articulate what is drawing me so deeply to his work. I keep getting stuck on this sentence, though, and the feeling seems a little outside of articulation in a way that seems appropriate. Anyway—
Billy has been making work that I liked for many years but suddenly fell hard for in late 2024 when Nanahari Edit was released through @dinzuartefacts. Potential contradictions existed happily in the space of that track—buzzing and ethereal, granular and expansive, floating and composed. Early last year, two live sets appeared on Billy’s bandcamp that stunned—particularly the Lot recording, wherein the music moves with a suspicious, scanning tension while remaining plaintive and emotional. (The low end hits, too.)
These recordings took me from a level of sincere admiration to “wait, this might be some of the best music out there?!” rather quickly. To excerpt them in brief fragments in this post would only undignify them—please seek them out on bandcamp and better yet, subscribe to Billy’s work. (That he is comfortable sharing a gem like Hotels in Japan only with a self-selected group of listeners…well, all I can say is you should become one of them.)
What excites me about Capacity, this new album, is how Billy takes the textures, tones, and approaches that have been so thrilling to hear in longform iterations and uses the album format to highlight the breadth of his work. Every description I used above applies here, too; listening right now, I’d also throw in gnarled, determined, and disarmingly beautiful for good measure.
